Contemporary schooling is undergoing a significant transformation through the increased involvement of private actors, logics, and infrastructures within public education systems. The shift toward a hybrid education landscape has prompted concerns regarding the erosion of the publicness of education.
The edited volume Public-Private Entanglement in Education: Mapping, Understanding, and Evaluating addresses two core challenges emerging from this
development. Analytically, it responds to the need for frameworks capable of capturing the hybrid, multidimensional, and evolving character of public-private relations. Normatively, it explores what may be transformed or lost as public and private roles become more tightly interwoven – at a time when coherent vocabularies and comprehensive, normative frameworks for assessing these changes are absent.
Public-Private Entanglement in Education brings together contributions that offer empirical examinations, conceptual tools, and normative evaluations that illuminate how public-private configurations emerge, evolve, and reshape everyday educational work in
varied contexts, and what values are at stake. Collectively, the chapters move beyond the increasingly inadequate dichotomy of “public” versus “private,” foster crossdisciplinary dialogue, and provide insight into the drivers, logics and consequences of public-private entanglement in education.
The volume culminates in two integrative frameworks: a multidimensional model identifying organizational dimensions affected by public private entanglement, and a value framework for assessing and evaluating the resulting educational shifts. Together, they offer researchers, policy advisors, and educational practitioners tools to map, understand, and evaluate the complex entanglement of public and private sectors in contemporary education.
